Fashion Health – Strategies for communicating
Language Use
Foreign Language
The pink salon, MARRON, uses English on its signboards, stating that “welcome to paradise.” This emphasizes the welcoming atmosphere of the salon. In addition, since they are using English, they are probably targeting customers from foreign nations as well. However, interestingly, they are prohibiting the entrance of foreign people according to the warning sign of the salon.
Uchi and Soto
The Explanation
As is also explained in the contents page, the explanation of the girls in the store also has the language use in the sentence. That is, in the explanation, it mentions お客様 and they (the business side) are recommending the girls who are working in the pink salon. Thus they are maintaining the uchi and soto relationship in the explanation, which refers to the relationship with people in higher positions (customers) and lower positions (business side).
Keigo in Warning Sign
In the warning sign, they used language such as 固くお断りしております。, meaning that “ we strongly prohibit (the entrance of the applicable people above)”. This is not simply keigo, but it is the language that deny people by using the keigo so that they can give pressure.
Appealing Themes
Some of the pink salons are appealing to the themes of each store. For instance, this pink salon, Nyan Nyan Paradise, has the concept of cats, and it can be assumed from the name of the store, which is the Japanese way to say the cat’s meow voice. However, compared to sexy cabaret clubs, they are most difficult to imagine or understand the specific themes of the salon because of the less image used on the signboards.
