Kabuki-cho, the center of the Tokyo nightlife welcomes everyone into the mysterious yet exciting experience. Urbanites with daily stress and exhaustion from harsh reality seek extraordinary experience that erase these negative emotions. One of the well-known activities that we can experience in Kabuki-cho is in the red light district. The industry is in a constant need for new workers. Therefore, scouts act as a mediator to successfully bring more workers, indirectly contributing to the prosperity in the Kabuki-cho economy.

Has a scout ever approached you saying, “Onee-san you are so beautiful. What is your plan for tonight?”

In this section, I will introduce the verbal communication methods used by these scouts to successfully convince the female pedestrians walking down the streets of Kabuki-cho.

Why is it important to observe the verbal communication of scouts?

Although these verbal communication methods seem random at first glance, observing them would allow us to further understand the full picture of scouts and their verbal communication methods.

  • Scouts are attempting to present certain images to different targets by using these verbal communication methods

  • Some verbal communication is used as an escape method to hide their true intention and identity

  • There are different methods used for different types of targets and this is influenced by the cultural stereotypes and social concepts in Japan
