Introduction

Why Signboards?

“The most pertinent factor in deconstructing signboards is that they form a part of the “identity” that is deliberately created to project a desired personality. This suggests that signboards are culturally relevant, and reflect the aspirations of a group of people”-Gaurav Mathur (Marthur, G. 2005, p. 80. )

Mathur published an article on the MIT Press that discussed the theory on how signboards are a reflection of culture. He conducted this study by analyzing the difference between the signboards from different times and see why there was a change. He talked about how the globalizing world is changing the culture in India and how this is reflected and seen in the signboards in the country (Marthur, G. 2005).

This section of the website will be focusing on signboards in the Nichome area. Nichome is a place known for its open sexuality. Sign Boards are often overlooked due to its usage in the public, but signboards in Nichome provide a deep insight on the culture in that space. Just as Marthur and his study suggested, the signboards in Nichome is also a reflection on their culture. Hence, one needs to take a closer look into the signboards people often overlook and see what cultural meaning they provide. One can make important findings such as the representation of gay people and HIV through signboards .
