Introduction

This section will focus on the people of the district, specifically looking at customers. Shinjuku Golden-Gai originated as a postwar black market and later became one of Tokyo's central areas where prostitution occurred under the guise of the restaurant business. And now it has become such a famous drinking district that it has been featured in foreign tourist books. The fact that the townscape of those days has remained throughout its long history can be attributed to the fact that the people who work in and visit Golden-Gai want it that way. In light of this, knowing what kind of people gather in Golden Gai, how they communicate with each other and investigating why they choose to come to Golden Gai in the first place, will enable people to understand the essence/nature of Golden Gai.

Why Focusing on People(Customers)?

Place refers to “a meaningful location” and “places must have some relationship to humans and the human capacity to produce and consume meaning.” (Cresswell, T. 2004, p.7)

The reason why I chose people is that knowing people leads to understanding the place itself. Golden-Gai is not just a space but a place because of the workers who run stores here and the customers who gather here to drink, eat, and socialize. Exploring the customers who visit Golden- Gai will help us understand what meaning they add to this place.
