Sensory Methodologies (Shia)
Welcome to My Page!
In this section, I would like to dicuss about some sensory aspects that is structuring Golden Gai. In order to proceed with this research, mainly, Kelvin’s reading “The sensuous city: Sensory methodologies in urban ethnographic research” would support what I would like to achieve in this section. For the domains the page would analyse how community is created in Golden Gai by focusing on 3Ss: Sound, Sight, and Smell.
What is Sensory Methodologies? (Theory Introduction)
First of all, what does it mean by Sensory Methodologies? Sensory Methodologies focuses on human scenes to discover the urban area!
In the biginng part of Kelvin’s reading, it is mentioned that, the monotony of activities, events, habits, and other unexpected urban encounters that make up city life include a variety of "multi-sensory bombardment" (Kelvin, 2015; Butler, 2006) that comes from both human and non-human sources. (Kelvin, 2015). This part portrays that the creation of community is also support by “sense.”
Moreover, specifically going through the reading Durkheim begins his hierarchy with the following senses: touch, which "may substitute sight and occasionally even hearing," and smell and taste, which are "meager... and offer us essentially nothing to admire." He then moves on to sight and hearing, the key senses. (Kelvin, 2015; Gross and Jones, 2004: 74).

In order to analyze cities and urbanity, Kaufmann (2011: 15-20) proposes three theoretical tenets:
“(1) to reconcile abstract and sensory methods; (2) to free up the static view of space; and (3) to see mobility as change rather than as movement. “
Regarding the first principle, Kaufmann points out that scholarly approaches to understanding the urban are constrained because they frequently ignore how cities are felt, seen, or experienced and instead examine them in terms of their abstract purposes. Kaufmann maintains that since cities have morphologies as well, it is important to focus more on the sensory structure of cities and locations. (Kelvin, 2015; Kaufmann, 2011).
In order to discover how community is created in Golden Gai, it is significnat to analyze th city from sensual perspectives, especially, sound, sught, and smell.
