Study of Use of Space: Proxemics
Personal space can be identified as the way how people take physical distance among others. You do not want strangers or a friend that is not your boyfriend or a girlfriend to start sitting next to you with arms around your neck. You have your own personal space where you allow others to invade. The study of physical space is considered to be Proxemics (Mingus, 1990). However, not only physical distance but also proxemics refers to “The study of how human beings communicate through their use of space” (Hall, 1963). Proxemics studies do not only refer to physical distance but can be focused on constructing their own personal space, which will be covered in the following pages that you will see.
Urban Area and Personal Space
In anonymous urban situations, they avoid one another, closing themselves off from direct communication. Urbanites frequently hide behind newspapers. They usually avoid excessive eye contact as an invitation to interaction. They maximize their “personal space”
(Sommer, 1996: Karp, Stone, Yoels, and Dempsey, 2015).
In the urban town, every citizen would be experiencing human interactions, but they are not fully interacting. They are always aware that the other citizens are not their best friends so they avoid close communication. In Golden-Gai, this idea can be applied since this place is an urban town; however, a little bit different. Usual visitors of Golden-Gai have their own way of interacting by creating their own personal space. Customers utilize their space to avoid close communication but this space is a space for interaction at the same time. They maintain a certain distance between people and interact with others. Then, what aspects are helping visitors to create a personal space where they interact not necessarily in an urban way in Golden-Gai…
In Golden-Gai, visitors fully take advantage of the space to create a space where they can feel at home, where they can visit again and again.

Personal Space
Conclusion
The distinguishing feature allows the visitors to feel that they are in a different place. At the same time as they visit, again and again, they get to know the place and start personalizing the place as they want to interpret it. The personal space is created by several elements as the distinguished pages explain giving every customer to feel the Golden-Gai. The place that they know and the elements that make Golden-Gai the “Golden-Gai” enables this part of Kabukicho to be their home. Thank you for reading through the website and I hope you enjoyed it. I will be more than welcome to talk about this topic more with you all if we have a chance. See you soon.
