INTRODUCTION
Golden-Gai is such a unique place that is not similar to any other areas in Shinjuku. Golden-Gai is probably the only place that has maintained many communities without money. People gather in this area for their own entertainment, community, comfort, and probably drinking. Having fun cannot be maintained only by people, atmosphere, and of course alcohol. There is always an element to keep people protected and safe in such a unique, but unstable environment. The security in the area is one of the biggest elements generating it. As the community becomes private, the privacy problems become more and more serious. Also, it is inevitable to avoid causing drinking problems in the area where many bars place. Though the private and comfortable place is provided to people in Golden-Gai, police and surveillance cameras also function. Seeing the roles of security in Golden-Gai would enable us to consider how people consciously or unconsciously follow rules to generate such a unique community.
First of all… what is security?
So the permanence of place and the mobility of capital are always in tension and places are constantly having to adapt to conditions beyond their boundaries. Places compete to get a share of the mobile capital - encouraging companies to invest in their particular form of fixity. Places have to sell themselves as good places to live and work and invest (Keams and Philo, 1993).
Keams and Philo are insisting there is always tension between the permanence of place and the mobility of capital; indeed, it is a fragile relationship that can easily be collapsed by a small trigger. In order to protect such a fragile community, companies or associations to support, protect, and sometimes even restrict the communities, which can be called as security here.
This security is important, for if they are bothered, not only may they face physical danger, but they will have been disgraced or “dissed” (dis- respected). Many of the forms dissing can take may seem petty to middle-class people (LeGates, 1996).
Since the security does not only refer to the physically protected environment, but also an environment that protects people’s unique personalities.
