What are Security Services in Golden-Gai?
In here, security services infers to any material services that keep the security in Golden-Gai. Golden-Gai is one of the areas that put emphasis on protecting people’s privacy and security in order to keep the unique atmosphere there. The security in the area is one of the biggest elements generating it. As the community becomes private, privacy problems become more and more serious. Also, it is inevitable to avoid causing drinking problems in the area where many bars place. Though the private and comfortable place is provided to people in Golden-Gai, police and surveillance cameras also function. Seeing the roles of security in Golden-Gai would enable us to consider how people consciously or unconsciously follow rules to generate such a unique community. Surveillance cameras, black doors, emergency lights, and so on play a significant role in keeping security in this area. The installation of such material services is definitely one of the elements to generate the community in Golden-Gai.
1. Surveillance cameras
There are a number of posters that report to people that security cameras are working. As it is written on the yellow poster, all those security cameras are controlled and supervised by the association (Shinjuku Sanko Shopping Center Promotion Association) of Golden-Gai. The total number of bars in this area is also about 300, and more than half of the bars have these yellow posters to warn people. Indeed, the surveillance cameras in GOlden-Gai are covering half of the bars to keep security.

is a corporate organization established in 1969 with Sanko Business Cooperative Association as its parent organization. It is a juridical organization established in 1969.
The town was created by the resilient people after the war and has been passed down to the present without being redeveloped. Their duty is to work to improve and maintain the town environment as well as maintain the town's environment.

2. Emergency Lights
If you close up, you can see the two red emergency lights on the gate.
Not only emergency lights are installed in this gate, but also you can see the surveillance cameras.
Since the area of Golden Gai is small and compact, it is roughly the size of a football pitch, and it is highly likely to a fire break out easily or some incidents happen. Preventing incidents as small as possible, installing the emergency lights on the gate is essential in terms of letting people know about the emergency ASAP.
3. Emergency Buttons
Above all the bars’ doors, you can find red buttons which seem to be emergency buttons. Interviewing police-man in Golden-Gai made it clear that those emergency lights have not lighted up for at least more than 2 years. In fact, policemen at the police station did not even know what those lights are for. In order to clarify the purpose of those emergency lights, interviewing bar owners was essential. He answered that those lights are for fire alarms. The red emergency lights installed in the gate of Golden-Gai are all connected to the emergency buttons that place above the bars’ door; therefore, people can easily know when an emergency is with the lights on the gate.
4. Narrow Paths (Shortcuts)
The main streets in Golden-Gai are connected by these narrow streets. You can go to other streets using these narrow paths (shortcuts) so that it does not take much time to go to other streets from one another. Although it does not seem to connect to the security since you cannot see much because of the darkness, however, it also can be said that these narrow paths make people to escape to their personal space. You do not see many people inside of these narrow, therefore, it is an escape when you want to away from any social interaction with others in the golden-gai.
And... So WHAT?
The security services that I have mentioned above are material products that support the security in Golden Gai. Some of them originally had the purpose of protecting security. surveillance cameras, for instance, only have the purpose of creating a safe space. On the other hand, narrow paths, are not meant to have such a security-kind-of purpose when they were created. The purpose of security of each product comes after they are created. The place gives the products the original and unique meaning of existing in the area. They are all having their own purpose for existing, which creates security in Golden Gai.
