Nonverbal Communication of

Ni-chome bartenders

Introduction

by Christina

“Thousand of experiences teach us, that space communicates” – E.T. Hall (1990, as cited in Agnus, 2012)

Both paralinguistic, as well as proxemics, is a language that goes beyond words. These non-verbal cues supplement the spoken communication, hence “mak[ing] the interpretation of the sender’s meaning complete” (Agnus, 2012). This section will therefore specifically consult the service providers’ usage of nonverbal communication: specifically paralanguage, proxemics, as well as kinesics. Once again, similar to the previous section, this is a case-by-case scenario.

Paralanguage:

nonverbal cues surrounding the speech, such as pitch, volume, tempo, and intensity of the voice

Kinesics:

body motions that include gestures, body movements, postures, facial and eye behaviours

Proxemics:

use and perception of one’s social and personal space, such as in seating and spatial arrangements

Conclusion

Although mentioning how bartenders are keen on creating intimacy with the patrons regardless of their sexual orientation as a means to receive profit, through the scenarios, it could be seen how nonverbal cues can amplify not only the inclusion but also the exclusion of patrons by bartenders. Moreover, these wordless communications could also be a confirmation as well as an expression of one’s sexuality.
